News - Report: Internal Competition Round 3 - Open Subject

08 December 2011

The internal competition season continues unabated, picking up speed last night with the second 'open' round of the season. The judge was Alan Taberer from Weston Turville (Imagez Camera Club). Presented with 29 prints and 50 digital projections he really had his work cut out in judging the diverse range of images presented to him, especially as he prefers to judge the images without previewing them first!

Starting with the prints Alan spent a reasonable amount of time on each image, noting the good points, highlighting areas that could possibly be improved on and utilising a wide range of marks. Alan had held back four or five prints for further deliberation and scoring at the end and the eventual winner with a score of 20 was Simon Raynor with a beautiful image titled Standing Stones of Machrie.

During the break we were able to examine in closer detail the higher scoring images and I have to say there was some stunning work entered!

Next up, following the break, were the Digital Projected Images and again we had a very wide range of images and styles. As with the prints Alan judged the projected images without preview and scoring again covered a reasonable range of marks. After holding back six or seven images Alan finally ended up with three images with 20 points, the images were Beadnell Bay Sunrise by Darren Ackers, Kayleigh 1 by Chris Bourne and Freedom of Speech also by Darren Ackers. After much thought and deliberation the digital projected image chosen as Best on the Night was Kayleigh 1 by Chris Bourne, but well done to Darren for getting two twenties!

I think Alan did a sterling job in judging the competition, he made good use of a wide range of marks with reasonably consistent scoring, though as always some members may not have agreed with some of his scores (Bloody 13?!). Alan also provided interesting and useful comments on each image. What was interesting was the large number of portraits entered, particularly in the digital section.

So, to highlight, the two 'Best on the Night' images were Standing Stones of Machrie by Simon Raynor in the prints and Kayleigh 1 by Chris Bourne. Well done to all those that entered and particularly those who scored well. Don't be put off entering the next round if you didn't do as well as you'd hoped this time around, keep plugging away and striving to improve.

Thanks to Alan Taberer for a very entertaining evening and thanks to Clive for sorting all the entires out.

You can see the winning and highly commended images in the competitions section, along with the results but in the meantime I hope you're all preparing for the next round of the competition in January, it's closer than you might think!
